Falls. Bad.

Here is your challenge:

In the comments section, write everything that this survivor could do better in order to get up the stairs more safely.

We all know that falls are bad.

Falls can kill you. For survivors, falls are especially bad. Stroke affects balance, coordination, strength, and any number of other things that can lead to an increased risk of falls. On top of that, survivors tend to fall towards their affected side. In the affected side tends to be more osteoporotic. So have at it. This is good place to start as anywhere. What is this gentleman doing wrong? How do you do differently? What can you suggest?

Wrong foot leading, the good go up to heaven, the bad go down to hell. He is dangerously leaning back as he goes up. Placing the cane on the upper step before the good foot goes on it.

Maybe he should move the cane together with his left leg.

Same as Dean said, plus ditch the quad cane so that his cane doesn't interfere with his right foot.

Put in and use a railing. Hold the railing with his stronger hand, step up with his stronger leg...hold the cane in his weaker hand)

It's a pity. Many strokies fall because their planning skills are severely impaired or non existent. They can't make a doable plan that can help them improve on their ownSimply lazy, and uses everything(age, fatigue) as alibis why they can't improve. Most of this generations strokies ,if sent back to the cavemen era gets eaten alive by the wild because they can't do anything on their own.

I agree with all y'all. I actually think he's not ready at all to do this without "contact guard" assistance so, if he goes south he doesn't go south. So, he needs a tune up from a PT, I'd say. I just talked to my wife about this and she said "He's doing well without a rail." So, I guess there is debate there. She also mentioned Deans catch that the cane should stay down and the foot goes up.

That was kind of scary to watch. I have spent a whole lot of this past year trying to get up and down stairs with my cane while dragging a wheeled backpack. I have come a long way but still probably doing things wrong.

The strong leg should be going up the stairs first rather than his weak leg. oc1dean said it best with the whole heaven&hell thing. It's how I remember myself. And yes, for going up the stairs he should be leaning forward.
